Refill Jackson Initiative Statement on Recent Cuts to AmeriCorps

Along with more than 800 programs nationwide, Refill Jackson Initiative’s (RJI) Green Corps program received notice on April 28, 2025 of the termination of our AmeriCorps State grant. The Refill Jackson Green Corps program is a workforce training program that combines skill building and community impact. Our members earn industry-recognized credentials and apply those skills when completing environment improvement, flood mitigation, and community revitalization projects that both improve the conditions of our neighborhoods and streets and improve the quality of our drinking water.

Refill Jackson Initiative is extremely fortunate and thankful to be a part of the incredible Jackson community, which has stepped up to ensure we are able to continue our Green Corps program without interrupted living allowances for our members. However, for RJI the cuts to AmeriCorps programs nationwide are not only a loss of funds, but a great loss of opportunity for young adults who are working towards an improved quality of life, the core of our mission. AmeriCorps provides our Refill Jackson Green Corps members the opportunity to earn an education award of $1,956 upon completion of their term, which can be used to repay qualified student loans or pay current educational expenses. Our members overwhelmingly access Mississippi’s own community college system – a double loss for both our members and the state. Many of our members stand to lose access to quality of life benefits, such as SNAP and health insurance, with the loss of AmeriCorps.

AmeriCorps is not just another grant or internship program – it is an investment in American citizens to learn and apply new skills by meeting community needs. It is a resource that benefits our young adults in particular in ways that straightforward funding cannot replace. The young adults who come to RJI face enough challenges to move into self-sufficiency. Without the Education Award and wrap-around benefits that AmeriCorps provides, the ladder to climb is only steeper.
